Laura through to the semi’s of Aussie Open

Posted on 29/01/2009 at 2:34 am by admin - Category: News Twitter It!

Laura’s now through to the semi finals of the Australian Open after her opponent Elena Bogdan of Romania (who was runner-up in the French Open), was forced to retire after a fall earned her a painful ankle injury.
Laura had won the first set 6-3, but was trailing 5-2 0-30 when Elena fell, it looked like it was going to go to a final set, but Elena was advised to retire and did so after attempting to serve.

Robson will now play Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand for a place in the final. The top seed was beaten by Laura in last year’s Wimbledon final.

Does anyone know why Laura and Anna didn’t play their doubles quarter final match ? It just says it was a ‘walkover’ on the Aussy Open website.

I’m wondering that too, can’t find any news about it. Anna was beaten in her singles match yesterday 6-1, 6-0 which is pretty bad, maybe she picked up an injury? Shame if that’s the case.

That crossed my mind as well. I looked on Laura’s own website and it hasn’t been updated since October, maybe you should offer to keep it up to date for her :o )

That’s not hers :P
It’s just another fansite. There were quite a few that popped up after she won Wimbledon but they all quickly died since none of them kept up to date.

They do have a domain for an official site though (that her agent owns) but they’ve never done anything with it. I guess they’re waiting til she moves up from juniors fully until they make a site for it. Perhaps they’ll have some forums I can moderate for them. Not sure I’ll have time for news updates and that!

That said, if they don’t make a site I’ll probably try and turn this one semi-official and try and get more people working on it, open some forums etc.

Found some interesting info on a BBC Sports webpage regarding the retirement of Elena Bogdan. According to the correspondent Elena was quite literally forced to retire – the doctor actually walked onto the court and all but dragged her off in tears, dramatic stuff. This is the link – http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7857306.stm – and the bits about Laura are very near the bottom, noteably at the time of 0100.
I hope the Beeb get to show her final, it is going to be on one of the show courts after all. Other wise we’ll have to wait until Wimbledon to see her in action.

I’m not optimistic about the final being televised…the live streams from the tournament have only covered the five main singles & doubles competitions. Even when there has been a junior match on the show court that the stream is supposedly covering, all you get is a message saying, ‘There is no play currently on this court’. It makes you appreciate the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage all the more.

By the way, I’d like to know why Laura’s semi-final has been scheduled for 1500 local time on a day which is likely to hit 40+ degrees again. Where’s the sense in that? They should play in the morning.
