Robson resists Peers pressure

Britain’s Laura Robson breezed into the third round after a quick-fire victory over Sally Peers in front of a packed Court 4. Apart from being interrupted by a bee buzzing around her just as she was about to serve for the match, she encountered no problems in defeating her Australian opponent 6-3, 6-2.

Robson, the champion last year, served superbly, hitting the corners of the service boxes with speed and accuracy, which allowed her to dictate the rallies. Peers possessed a strong forehand and occasionally put it to good use, while in the first set her serve matched Robson’s for power.

But after taking the first set in half an hour, Robson was unstoppable. The home crowd watched in appreciation as the second seed made the game look easy, gliding across the court and effortlessly tucking away winners.

As Daniela Hantuchova, Robson’s conqueror in the main draw, will confirm, the British girl is beginning to look ready for her rookie season on the women’s Tour. Her first serve averages about 100mph, and her second serve is spun into the court at 88mph. As a left hander, her forehand cross court goes into the majority of players’ weaker stroke, the backhand. And her own two-handed backhand is measured and reliable under pressure.

But as for defending her junior crown here, there is still much work to do. There are plenty of tough opponents left in the draw hoping to prevent her becoming the first junior to defend her crown for 19 years. Next up in the third round is Quirine Lemoine of the Netherlands who fought back from a set down to beat 14th seed Chanel Simmonds.
